a big little word
Mark Twain was the first to say, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” These words of wisdom are timeless and not just applicable to dogs. In fact, there are many scenarios where a little guy can be just as dangerous, or more dangerous than a giant. The David v. Goliath story is a good example. Sharks and crocodiles rank among the most feared creatures on earth but the tiny tsetse fly and mosquito cause around 75,000 times more deaths every year.
The big predators look scary, but the tiny little guys who transmit trypanosomes (African Sleeping Sickness), Zika and West Nile virus are exponentially more dangerous. Time spent as a police officer taught me that you never underestimate a man in a street fight just because he is small in stature. My time as an evangelist and encourager has taught me to never underestimate little guys when it comes to the words we speak to ourselves and others. The tiny, two letter word “IF” is perhaps the best example…
“IF you’ve finished your homework, you can play Xbox”
“IF you don’t get in any more trouble, the charges will be dropped”
“IF you pass the background check, you’ve got the job”
“IF it passes inspections, the house is sold”
“IF he can do it, so can I”
Every person on earth uses the IF-THEN statement. We use it to set conditions when negotiating with others, when giving instructions, and (my favorite) when encouraging others. This tiny little word is found in the bible nearly 1,600 times. Jesus Christ used it often. IF you do some research you will notice that when He does, the condition is always placed on us, never on God. IF we follow the instructions for Christian living, we will reap the rewards. The bible tells us that God is always faithful to all his promises (Psalm 145:13) and that He is always there waiting on us to do our part in the most important IF-THEN scenario of all (Revelation 3:20).
If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you
If you do not believe that I am He, you will indeed die in your sins
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us
